Arabia Lake
Arabia Lake is more than 100 years old and was built to supply water for the quarrying operations that were active during the first half of the 20th century.
Because large trees now grow on the dam, it is not immediately obvious to many first-time visitors that this is a manmade lake. At a glance, it can feel like a natural feature that has always been part of the landscape.

A recent fisheries survey found bluegill, largemouth bass, warmouth, and black bullhead in the lake. Although the overall fishery was rated poor, the lake still attracts anglers. Extensive bladderwort vegetation can make fishing more challenging.

The lake also shows strong signs of beaver activity. Many trees around the shoreline have been cut or gnawed over the years, especially near the head of the lake and along Stephenson Creek. From the cache area, you may be able to spot the nearby beaver dam upstream.
A Different Chapter
During World War II, and continuing into the early 1950s, Georgia Tech conducted underwater tests here under contract with the U.S. Navy. Explosive charges were lowered to depths of about 10 feet and ranged from less than one pound up to 90 pounds.
The metal piers along the east shore and the metal structure farther out in the lake were used during this testing. The near-shore piers once supported a walkway, and munitions were moved into place using a cable and pulley system before being lowered into the water.
A nearby Quonset hut served as storage during this period, and later testing in the early 1950s focused on the development of an underwater sound system.
