The Crosshill Reservoir was constructed under the instruction of the 6th Duke of Argyll in 1820 in anticipation of the legal changes of 1823 which allowed the development of a legal whisky distilling industry. Two water mains were laid from the loch, one to supply the town and the second to supply the anticipated distillery boom. For although in 1820 there was only one distillery in the town (the Cambeltown Distillery 1817), by 1825 it had been joined by twelve others, and within twenty years there were nearly thirty distilleries operating in the town.
However the Crosshill Loch also served as the inspiration for a famous Music Hall song, for it was here on the night of 23 December 1930 that Duncan McCallum, one of Cambeltown’s last great Victorian whisky barons was drowned. The circumstances of his death remain a mystery, it may have been a tragic accident, although others suggest that this 83 year old bachelor was broken hearted to see three of his four distilleries demolished (Kinloch, Glennevis & Glenside) and the fourth mothballed by new owners, however the rumors that he was involved in various shady dealings to try and save his business empire was always malicious speculation.
Now do you really expect me to play fair by telling you exactly where the cache is hidden. No such luck I’m afraid, however should you chance upon a cocky wee lad frae Arbroath, with a sprig of white heather I’m sure that he will be able to lead you straight to the cache.
