Off SH 30 not far from Te Kuiti. Next to Mangaokewa Railway Viaduct
This area was frequently occupied by the Great Maori Chief Maniapoto during the 17th Century. It was an important hunting ground and the source of medicinal plants. It is sacred ground for the local Maori and should therefore be treated with respect.
A dramatic limestone bluff arises above the stream. In the past this was one wall in a large cave with the stream running through it. Eventuially the roof of the cave and the weaker walls collapsed leaving just the bluff.
About 45 mins return.
Sideline walk is a small cascade.
Across the suspension and follow the track along the Mangaokewa stream.
Tawa dominates but there are occassional Rimu,Kahikitea and Matai close to the track.
There is a small waterfall at the end.
The Waitomo council are planning a return trip on the other side of the stream, this means the building of another small bridge and then you will end at the carpark.
At this stage the cache is a Micro-Boost container.
Next time I go through I will replace with a more regular size.
