Geocache Description:

This cache is located in a small cemetery in Cookson, OK on Lake Tenkiller.

This cache is part of a series placed in cooperation with a fellow cacher "ogilbie". The cache is a camo waterproof match holder. There is an electric fence placed around the cemetery due to the cattle in the adjoining field, so be careful around the fence.

There is one semi famous person buried here. Heist, Al b. October 5, 1927 d. October 2, 2006
Major League Baseball Player. He was a centerfielder for three seasons (1960 to 1962) with the Chicago Cubs and Houston Colt.45s. His best year was 1961 when he had a season high 82 hits with 7 homeruns. After retiring as a player, he was a coach for three seasons (1966 to 1967, 1980) with the Houston Astros and San Diego Padres. In 177 career games, Heist had 126 hits with a .255 lifetime batting average.

This cemetery was located in the SW1/4 NE1/4 of Sec 10, T14N, R22E, it was fenced and well-kept. Initially, the cemetery was used as the burial ground for the Ballew family, but gradually members of the community started using it also. In or around 1948 Tenkiller Lake was being built. The location of the cemetery is now under water. Reinterment was to be made in a cemetery approximately 1.7 direct miles north-northeast of Old Cookson, Cherokee
County, Oklahoma, in the southeast corner of Sec 2, T14N, R23E. Which is known as the Cookson-Proctor Cemetery today.
The Proctor Cemetery was moved to this site also during that time.
