Situated in the heart of beautiful Galena, the Magazine Street Steps cache will take you to one of Galena's unique and interesting "off the beaten path" areas. The cache is located on the Magazine Street Steps, a concrete stairway climbing from Magazine Street to Prospect Street. On your hunt for this cache, you will be be able to view four of Galena's other treasures:
1. A "Magazine" building used to store ammunition for a possible attack on Galena during the Black Hawk War of 1832. The attack never materialized, but the building stands in very good condition today. The stone and wood building is the first structure to the east at the bottom of the concrete steps.
2. The Galena Public Library. The Galena Public Library and Reading Room was established by B. F. Felt, a local merchant, in 1894 and formally opened on January 3, 1895. It first occupied two rooms on the second floor of the post office, then known as the Customs House. The initial collection contained 1,522 volumes, mostly donated by the founder. In 1906 matching funds from the Carnegie Foundation and the Felt Estate were given for the construction of a new library. This building is located just south of the Magazine building. Parking for this cache is usually available behind the library (on Magazine Street).
3. Linmar Gardens. After you find this cache, walk to the top of the steps and continue along the rough road. Linmar Gardens are spectacular private gardens located on each side of the path/road. You can steal some views of the gardens from the path, but full tours are available only by appointment. A sign on the property provides a phone number for scheduling an appointment.
4. The Old High School. At the top of your climb you will see the Old High School to the northwest. As the name indicates, the building was the old city high school. In the 1980's, the building was converted to condominiums. This building is visible from most areas of Galena. The residents have some of the best views in town! Turn to the east and you too will have a great view of Galena.
