This cache has been archived.

Wild_Bill: Thanks so much to all who attended and helped this to be a much nicer place to visit, even if only for a short time. I expect to place more photos on the site page as soon as time permits, hopefully this week. };-{)>

The first time I visited the cache at this location, I was fortunate to join about 50 Amish folks watching a truly spectacular and beautiful sunset. This is one of many caching experiences that remains in the forefront of my memory. (Whenever the 3rd symptom of Gulf War syndrome doesn't interfere)

I'm aware of at least a few cachers with fond memories - and a few special caching tales about their experience at Pilot Rock. (Be sure to ask around. Some of these tales are pretty entertaining by themselves)

Pilot rock has an elevation of approximately 966 feet and is known to be the highest spot elevation in both Christian and Todd Counties. This cache is on a large stone outcropping and there are cliffs and deep crevasses near this cache. Be careful! Don't risk life and limb and avoid any dangerous spot. Be sure to bring your camera and/or binoculars. Pilot Rock is owned by the government, but access is not restricted. There are stairs leading part way up the rock, (Joe - This is the easy way) but some mild climbing is required at the top...nothing that requires special equipment.

Unfortunately this beautiful spot has been abused by others. There was a lot of graffiti and trash the last time I visited and other cachers report a lot of trash in the area. This eyesore tends to detract from the beauty of the spot and the breathtaking view from this perch. (Makes the Indian cry too)

I propose investing a small amount of time picking up some of the trash in the area, after which enjoying what will hopefully be a most spectacular sunset.

Sunset is scheduled to occur at 6:07pm this day. If CITO begins at 4pm we should be able to make at least a dent, get the trash to the base of the rock, loaded into a pickup, and reconvene back on top for the main event.

This time of year there shouldn't be much of an insect problem. Bring gloves and other favored implements for use in gathering trash. (I'll bring trash bags and a couple coolers of water and miscellaneous soft beverages) I recommend bringing flashlights to light your way back down after the evening's entertainment. Portable camp chairs are recommended but not required. A light jacket may be in order depending on the temperature and the breeze for the evening.

This is a great spot for a picnic. (Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and gravy sound real good!) If you like rappelling, I've seen folks doing this in this area and I believe folks with at least some experience could enjoy this. There are a number of caches surrounding this spot and folks might make a day of caching in the area. (The long ago Blue Moon Tour fondly comes to mind)

In case of inclement weather, I propose to schedule Sunday 10/21/2007, as a weather day for the event.

At least some of the trash may get picked up and make this a nicer spot for others to visit. I'll get my first CITO icon, the satisfaction of doing a good deed, and hopefully another great sunset out of the deal.

Everyone is most welcome! Regardless of whether you can attend the CITO or not, if you've never been to Pilot Rock, you're missing out on a memorable experience. (so long as you can block out the trash and the graffiti)

Parking can be found approximately 800-900 feet west of the cache location and slightly north of hwy 507. Approximate coordinates are N36 55.217 W87 17.286

Please come lend a hand, have a good time, enjoy the sunset, and enjoy the company of other great folks. After this, I recommend visiting MonkeyBrad and company at "The Next Royal Order of the Sleepless Knights." For more info about this event, check out GC148VP. I plan to be there!
