Gooi
The ‘Gooi’ is the part of the hill area in the province North Holland which runs to the southeast part of the province Utrecht. The grounds with six Gooi towns are mostly preserved as nature reserve. The populated area therefore are adjacent to the nature reserve and lacks large areas of farmland. What used to be 19th century farming villages transferred into centres of urban grounds. The enlargement of cultivation particularly took place on the centuries old small farming fields, which in the Gooi are called ‘engen’.

The woods and the heathland of the Gooi have many peculiar details like wet grounds with small pools which on the high sandy grounds are not that common; abandoned clay cavities, which shelters endangered flora; almost deserted sand grounds, where the wind can do what it wants; the sudden transition of the Gooiland to The Gooi Lake, from the time the ‘Zuiderzee’ nibbled on the hill area; the underground waterline, which in the lower areas ensured a constant delivery of clean water ; and the cultural historical heritage of the graves in hills, the scent of early colonies, tracks of old trade route and tools of stone which tell about the thousands years of inhabitants history.

Tafelberg
The ‘Tafelbergheide’ is a heath land which is situated at an relatively high altitude between the villages Huizen and Laren (NH) and which measures approx. 74 km2. This heath land has multiple difference in heights caused by ice of land origin during the Neogene-period (epoch: Pleistocene, Riss) about approx. 0.38-0.15 Ma (Mega-annum = million years) ago. The highest point in this landscape is the Tafelberg, which the heath land is named by. This 36.4 meter (N.A.P.) high ‘hill’ is one of the highest points in the province Noord-Holland.

On the heath land there a many clay cavities. These ‘holes of clay’ are caused by the former inhabitants in this area called ‘Het Gooi’, who used the clay to harden their farmyards and the floors of their houses. This clay was transported to this location from the Northern part of Europe by the glacier-ice during the Riss-period. For the Netherlands these ‘holes’ are very valuable for their unique and endangered flora to be seen there.

In 1987 the Dutch authorities declared the Tafelberg heath land to be a national monument. Since 1990 sheep graze the heath land and in 1991 cows were added to the stock of cattle.

Logging this cache is very easy. Park your car at the coordinate on top of the page. Here you can start your hike on the heath land of the ‘Tafelbergheide’ of about 2.5 kilometres. During your hike you have to answer four questions and take one picture.

WP 1) On N 52° 16.662 E 005° 12.765 you will find an information sign on which is stated which kind of forest (Dutch= ‘bos’) the heath land existed a very long time ago. Mail us the correct answer.

WP 2) Go via N 52° 16.748 E 005° 12.936 to N 52° 16.729 E 005° 13.311. At this point you will find an information plaque which states, amongst other information, which flora exists in the clay cavities and how many fenced clay cavities there are here. Mail us the name of the plant on the picture and the number of fenced clay cavities.

WP 3) Next via N 52° 16.646 E 005° 13.394 to N 52° 16.620 E 005° 13.633. This is the ‘Tafelberg’. It is 36.4 meters N.A.P, but the surroundings are not 0 meters N.A.P. Therefore: what is the difference in height between the surroundings of the Tafelbergheide and the spot (Tafelberg itself) you are standing on? Mail us the height in meters.
At this point is also the optional photo task. Take a picture of yourself or one of the team members showing the GPS, top of the ‘Tafelberg’ with a view on the Tafelbergheide. Make a picture of you and your GPS.

There are multiple paths back to the parking area.

What next? Mail your answers on the four questions. A reply will be mailed soon if your solutions are correct or not. Add your emailadress for a quick answer. When they are correct you're permitted to log the cache as found. Add the optional picture in your log. Please make some picture of the cows you have encountered. Do not (!) come within a distance of 25 meters!
Read the signs before you enter Tafelbergheid.

Het Gooi
Het Gooi is het Hollandse deel van de heuvelrug die doorloopt tot de zuidoosthoek van de provincie Utrecht. Het buitengebied van de zes Gooise gemeenten is grotendeels in beheer als natuurterrein. Daardoor grenzen de woonkernen direct aan natuurgebied. Grote landbouwenclaves ontbreken. De 19e-eeuwse agrarische dorpjes zijn tegenwoordig centra van stedelijk gebied. De uitbreiding van de bebouwing heeft vooral plaatsgevonden op de eeuwenoude akkertjes, in het Gooi engen genoemd.
Het bos- en heidelandschap van het Gooi kent diverse bijzonderheden, zoals natte bodems met kleine wateren, die op de hoge zandgronden geen vanzelfsprekendheid zijn; verlaten leemkuilen, die bedreigde plantensoorten een standplaats bieden; de abrupte overgang van Gooiland naar Gooimeer, uit de tijd dat de Zuiderzee hier aan de heuvelrug knaagde; de ondergrondse waterrug, die in de lager gelegen gebieden zorgt voor constante aanvoer van schoon kwelwater; en het cultuurhistorisch erfgoed als grafheuvels, sporen van de vroege nederzettingen, karrensporen van oude handelsroutes en stenen werktuigen, dat vertelt over duizenden jaren bewoninggeschiedenis.

Tafelberg
De Tafelberg een hoog gelegen heidegebied tussen Huizen en Laren van ongeveer 74 ha groot dat is gesitueerd in de gemeente Huizen. Het heidegebied kent verschillende hoogteverschillen, veroorzaakt door het landijs ten tijde van de Riss-ijstijd (de Neogene periode, subperiode: Pleistoceen, epoch: Saalien) ongeveer 0,38 tot 0,15 Ma (Mega-annum= miljoen jaar) gelden. Hoogste punt is de Tafelberg waaraan deze heide haar naam heeft te danken. Deze 36,4 (N.A.P.) metende 'heuvel' is een van de hoogste punten van de provincie Noord-Holland. De naam is ontleend aan een oude oriëntatietafel die zich op deze glooiing bevond maar die er tegenwoordig niet meer staat. Een deel ervan is nog te bezichtigen in het Goois Museum.

Op de heide treft men veel leemkuilen aan. Deze zijn het gevolg van activiteiten van vroegere bewoners van het Het Gooi die van deze plek klei haalden wat ze gebruikten om de vloeren en erven van hun boerderijen mee hard te maken. De leem is afkomstig uit Noord-Europa en werd tijdens de Riss-ijstijd met het gletsjerijs meegevoerd. De leemkuilen zijn zeer waardevol vanwege het voor Nederland unieke plantenleven dat men daar kan aantreffen.

In 1987 is het gebied tot natuurmonument benoemd.

Sinds 1990 laat men op de Tafelbergheide Drentse heideschapen grazen; in 1991 werden daar nog eens runderen aan toegevoegd. In het deel dat wordt begraasd mogen honden slechts aangelijnd lopen.

Het loggen van deze cache is redelijk eenvoudig. De auto kan geparkeerd worden op het coördinaat bovenaan de pagina. Hier start de wandeling van ongeveer 2,5 kilometer rondom het gehele wiel, waarbij antwoord gegeven moet worden op een vier vragen en tevens een foto gemaakt moet worden.

WPT1) Op N 52° 16.662 E 005° 12.765 kom je een informatiepilaar tegen. Hierop is te lezen wat voor soort bos het grootste deel van het land bedekte. Mail ons het juiste antwoord.

WPT2) Ga via N 52° 16.748 E 005° 12.936 naar N 52° 16.729 E 005° 13.311. Op dit punt staat een informatie paneel, met daarop informatie over de leemkuilen en de flora die hier voorkomen en hoeveel leemkuilen er omheind zijn. Mail ons de naam van de plant die op de foto staat en het aantal omheinde leemkuilen op de Tafelbergheide.

WPT3) Ga vervolgens via N 52° 16.646 E 005° 13.394 to N 52° 16.620 E 005° 13.633. Dit is de Tafelberg. De hoogte is 36,4 meters N.A.P., maar de omgeving ligt niet op 0 meters N.A.P. Daarom: mail ons het verschil in hoogte van de Tafelberg (waarop je staat) en de directe omgeving van de Tafelbergheide.

Op dit punt is tevens de optionele foto opdracht. Maak hier een foto van jezelf of één van de teamleden met GPS in de hand met uitzicht vanaf de Tafelberg. Wees creatief!

Er zijn meerdere wegen terug naar de parkeerplaats.

Hoe nu verder? Mail ons de antwoorden op de drie vragen. Je krijgt een antwoord terug of de antwoorden correct zijn. Zet je emailadres in je mail voor een snel(ler) antwoord. Daarna kan deze cache pas als gevonden gelogd worden. Voeg aan je log de gemaakte optionele foto toe. Voeg als je ze bent tegengekomen foto’s toe van de runderen. Zorg dat je niet binnen een straal van 25 meter van ze komt!
