The land features of Kensington Park, including hills,
flatlands, valleys and lakes, were all formed in the wake of one of
natureโs most powerful episodes: the Ice Age. The Ice Age began
over one million years ago and lasted until about ten thousand
years ago. We have brought you here to look at and learn about the
Kensington Gorge.
A gorge is a deep crevasse cut into rock. Gorges are created when a
glacier melts away very quickly. The glacial retreat from this area
took place between 12,000 to 14,000 years ago. The sediment rock
here dates back millions of years when this entire area was under
sea water.
The posted coordinates will take you to the gorge. While there,
observe the floor and walls of the gorge. You will be required to
answer two questions and email me the answers. Also, have a picture
taken of yourself at the coordinates.
1) During the glacial melt away, many pebbles rocks and boulders
were left in the debris. Take a look around you and count the
number of boulders in the immediate area. Email your answer to
me.
2) From where you are standing, estimate the height of the gorge.
Email your answer to me.
3) Donโt forget to include a picture of yourself at the gorge.
