Geocache Description:

This cabin was used to hide slaves as they traveled on the Underground Railroad. Rachael and Jimmy Silliven owned this cabin at the time and helped the escaping slaves. Many of Pennville's early settlers took an active part in leading the slaves to freedom in Canada. Joseph J Paxson and his 5 sons hauled produce and goods while hiding runaway slaves in one of their wagons that had a false bottom. There's a story that the Paxson brothers told of how they were stopped and asked about a runaway slave they had hidden in their wagon at the time. Luckily, the hiding spot was not discovered.
My Dad grew up close to here just down the road to the south. He and my mom live there now. You can see their big red barn with the name Paxson at the top. Give them a honk if you see them out and about. My dad tells me we are related to the Paxson brothers that helped the slaves get to their stops on the underground. This cabin was rebuilt using logs from another cabin nearby.
