In 1924, the City of Brisbane Act was passed by the Queensland
Parliament, amalgamating the Cities of
Brisbane and
South Brisbane; the Towns of Hamilton,
Ithaca, Sandgate, Toowong,
Windsor and Wynnum; and the Shires of Balmoral,
Belmont, Coorparoo, Enoggera, Kedron, Moggill, Sherwood,
Stephens, Taringa, Tingalpa, Toombul and Yeerongpilly to form the
current City of Greater Brisbane, now known simply as Brisbane
City, in 1925. This series of caches will celebrate these former
local goverments and their amalgamation.
Enoggera Divisional Board was formed in 1888 and became Enoggera
Shire Council in 1903. The Enoggera Shire Chambers were originally
located on the corner of Alderly Avenue and South Pine Road facing
South Pine Road. In 1928, a few years after the Brisbane City
Council amalgamation, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade purchased the
plot of land for a new fire station.
At some time after the 1930s, the Shire Chambers were relocated
onto Alderly Avenue so shops could be constructed on South Pine
Road. The Alderly fire station closed in 1974 in favour of the new
station at Lloyd St, Enoggera. Now all that remains is the Shire
Chambers building at 116 Alderly Avenue, which was recently holding
a few accountants' offices, but is now looking a little
blackened.
The cache itself has been hidden about 30 metres away from the
Shire Chambers on the other side of the road. It is magnetically
attached to the pedestrian bridge.
The cache also contains one of the four clues you will need to
find the final cache in this series, which will be listed when
enough of the series have been placed.
More information about the shire chambers and other interesting
historical areas of Enoggera from the Enoggera and Districts Historical
Society who are available at the Enoggera Memorial Hall on
Tuesdays and Thursdays 1000-1400. Most of the information for this
cache has come from their booklet "Enoggera
District Heritage Trail".
