The Story of Camau Lleidr (The Thieves’ Steps)

PLEASE MAKE SURE WHEN REPLACING THE CACHE THAT IT IS BEHIND MOSS AND STONES AND NOT VISIBLE FROM THE PATH.
The name refers to the original crossing place before the miners’ bridge was built. There are different stories on the origin of the name. One is that a man left the long-since closed Lisburne Arms one night, but was followed, robbed and murdered as he crossed the river. Another story is that a thief who had stolen a pair of shoes at Lampeter was found dead by the stepping-stones with the shoes still slung over his shoulders. The stones became obsolete when the original bridge was built in about 1860, with the modern replacement being erected in 2002. This cache is a companion to my other cache at PENYGIST that sits above the LEVEL FAWR. The LEVEL FAWR is the longest drainage tunnel in mid-Wales, draining 4 separate mines in the nearby hills. It eventually surfaces near here and water from these workings tumbles down the gorge to enter the Ystwyth by Camau Lleidr. A reconstruction project has refurbished a waterwheel that is sited just at the start of the walk down to the bridge, although as yet the energy available from it is not being put to any useful purpose .
Follow the road uphill from the Miners Arms (excellent Sunday Lunches) until you reach a fork in the road. Take the right fork and walk down until you pass the (now closed) Lisburne Stores. The footpath leads downhill just behind the shop. Follow the path down the steps, cross the bridge, turn right and follow the hint. The cache can be easily reached without leaving any path. GPS reception is so poor that you really shouldn't bother using your GPSr at all! Keep the clue handy YOU WILL NEED IT. If finders would like to Email me their own coords, I will try to improve the average readings.
