"The Shadows" is a name given to one or more people, who would follow and assess groups of Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) award participants on their Expedition Award. A few years ago I was one of them...it involved more than just following the group, I would instruct them in the art of navigation, outdoor cooking, basically living away from home in a tent for a weekend without mum or dad.
This cache is situated along the Esk Valley Railway line, and was a popular route for groups starting from Danby and finishing at the Scout Camp in Commondale. The spot where the cache is hidden was often used by "shadows" to watch the groups on the other side of the valley. Sometimes waiting for 2/3 hrs at the spot while the group moved up the valley. A wonderful view can be seen of the valley from here.
A family commitments came along so I had to give DofE up. But maybe one day I'll do it again, it was so rewarding and fun to do...
