Background: This cache was placed in honor of my first
Mother’s Day. One of the gifts that I received Mother’s Day morning
from my baby Harrison was a book of places to go and things to do,
arranged by cities, in Arizona. As I thumbed through the pages at a
glance, this little place caught my eye. A ZOO….in Douglas? Darren
knew right away that this was a place of interest for me and that
this might be the perfect place for me to spend Mother’s Day.
Within minutes I was on the phone to confirm that they were open on
this special day and then to call Ma Scrawlinn and ask if she would
like to join us (she is MY mother after all). Since their hours of
operation would be shortened for the day, we were in a rush to get
moving and so Ma Scrawlinn would meet us there.
We had never heard that there was even a zoo in that area. As we
pulled into the parking lot, I still was wondering if we were in
the right place. It didn’t look like a zoo; it looked like it was
just someone’s home. But, as soon as we opened the truck doors we
could hear the peacocks just on the other side of the trees. I was
so excited to see what animals were inside the fence. Ma Scrawlinn
(and longtime friend) arrived within minutes and we were on our way
in. We were greeted by the owner and the kids (probably high school
age) that work for him. Although they had their daily chores to do
around the zoo, they took the extra time to make sure that we
enjoyed it to the max by bringing food out to the animals and
giving us a little history on how they got them and where they came
from. There are two goats that know how to escape their pen and
kept chasing us down for more food. We laughed until we cried (more
than once). They were so funny and made for some great video!
I hope that anyone choosing to visit the zoo after logging the
cache has as good a time as we did. And, if you visit it on
Mother’s Day like we did, you may not be asking “Who’s your momma?”
but, “Who’s your llama?” instead!!! As we were ending our visit and
talking with the owner about placing a geocache I had mentioned the
name “Who’s your llama” and the owner thought I was asking what the
llamas name was. So he does have a name but I can’t remember what
it is now.
