Coos Bay native Steve Prefontaine is considered to be America's greatest distance runner ever. "Pre," as he was known to his fans, at one time held every American record from the 2000 meters to the 10,000 meters. At the University of Oregon he won three NCAA Cross Country championships and four 3-mile titles in Track and Field. He represented the U.S. in the 1972 Munich Olympics, finishing 4th in the 5000 meters.

4.) Sunset Memorial Cemetery - south of Coos Bay on Highway 101 (N 43 20.384, W 124 12.131) Where Steve Prefontaine is buried.

Located in the Coos Art Museum, 2nd & Anderson
