In 1804 Harriet Baring was born. On 10th April
1830 she married Henry Frederick Thynne, son of the 2nd Marquess of
Bath. They went on to have four children. In 1837 Henry inherited
Longleat. Sadly he died just three months later. His widow
continued to live at Longleat, but in 1850 she decided to look for
another property. Harriet Thynne, Dowager Marchioness of Bath came
to Muntham Court in Findon and became captivated by the house and
its setting. She bought it and lived there until her death in
1892.
The estate passed through generation to
generation until 1957 when Ulric Oliver Thynne died and the estate
was split up. At one point it was speculated that Diana Dors was to
buy the property. However no buyer was found and in 1961 West
Sussex County Council demolished the house. All that remains of it
is one wall N 50.52.515 W 000.25.415
Some of the layout of the grounds and garden however, can still be
seen if you take a walk around. If you want any further information
then I recommend the Findon Website
If you park at the suggested parking space then
on your walk, to the right, you will see an area known as The Clump
N 50 52.431 W 000 25.458 Contained
within are the graves of several of the Thynne family.
The cache is roughly half a mile from the parking
place.
The cache container is a small ammo box. I’m sure
I’ve no need to mention it but…please bear in mind where you are,
and respect those paying their respects. There are also likely to
be those dog walker type people around. Cycling is not permitted in
the grounds.
