A preform container (like a test tube) located on SWFWMD lands not far from Hillsborough River State Park lands.
Update 6/2013: The dark green area described below is long gone from Google's aerial imagery. and I've now met Postpile, not long after I placed the cahce. I also moved out of the area in 2010, so Postpile maintains the cache for me. But the clearing is still there and still changes conditions dramatically throughout the year.
Original cache description:
Although I’ve never actually met Postpile to date, we’ve corresponded on various things and both of us have done extensive exploration in the woods and swamps of Morris Bridge, Trout Creek, Hillsborough River State Park, Dead River, Washburn, Oakridge, Flatwoods, Jefferson, Wilderness Parks, etc. (did I miss any?
)
Postpile and I (and others) have noticed the “dark green area” that shows up in Google Earth. The dark green area is roughly centered at N28°06.290' W82°16,965. See it on Google Maps Here I've looked at the area several times and wondered if this was just a map anomaly or if there is actually something different there. In May 2006, Postpile abandoned placing a cache there. In more recent looks at Google Earth, I’ve noticed other similar areas on the aerial imagery, although most aren’t as noticeable as this one since they aren’t in the middle of the woods. I was hoping to post some coordinates for one, but I can’t find one at the moment. Then just a few weeks ago, I looked up the area on Microsoft’s map.live.com. And indeed, there is no dark green area there. But that day, while looking around using Microsoft and Google, I found a little clearing/pond that I hadn’t seen before. I added a waypoint to my GPSr and plotted the point on my topo map for future reference.
When Postpile named a cache after me, I felt obligated to go for the MEFF. I noted that this clearing would be reasonably convenient to one of the two logical bushwhacking routes from existing trails to the m^3 cache. I thought the clearing might make a good cache, and I wanted to "honor" Postpile with a bushwhacking cache. So I cobbled together the items needed to place a cache and headed out. After finding the m^3 cache, I found the clearing as planned and it is definitely a cache-worthy spot.
When the cache was placed, it was quite dry in the area, but there will be times when the area near the cache will be soggy, as well as times when wading will be required to reach the cache. A relatively short bushwhack is required, perhaps 400 meters, mostly on "high" ground, but about 150 meters in more swampy area. The container is not camo'd at all. Coordinates should be pretty good due to the clearing. FTF: Postpile of course - Congratulations!
