In 2004 a series of caches were placed to add to the enjoyment of cachers walking the West Highland Way from Milngavie to Fort William , the caches are generally very close to the Way and straightforward to find.
As part of the 2007 Scottish Cache Bash at Beinglas campsite, a few more have been added …..
For the Geologists , 10,000 years ago, at the time of the last Ice Age, much of Scotland was covered in glaciers. The largest glacier originated on Rannoch Moor, and followed the Highland Boundary Fault through Loch Lomond on its way , it picked up all sorts of gravel and rock. As the glaciers retreated, this detritus was dumped all over the place. At coastlines, the smaller rocks and gravels have been long since washed away by the waves, but the larger rocks remained. Called “Erratics” ,Loch Lomond is littered with them and they make excellent spots for hiding caches…
The cache shouldn’t be too hard to find ,its approx. 30 yds. from the path and it’s a big Erratic…
You can access the cache by starting from either Beinglas or Inversnaid Hotel, the latter is the shorter route, but more awkward to drive to….as an alternative, you could park at the Tourist information / pier at Loch Sloy and use the Hotel ferry …its quite cheap. (check last ferry times before leaving…. especially in Winter, and allow 5 hours for Argylling; Pollochro and Rab’s Wee Hideaway)
