TOO MANY FLIPPIN’ WAYPOINTS ?? Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

signyred: I tried the route for this cache today while making a recce for a December ramble.

There is supposed to have been a pub at the site where The Bull now is since 1542.
These digits should get folk to the 1st waypoint where TIM’s SEAT used to be.
Alas it has completely disappeared / rotted away.

Waypoint 2 IS still there – a post with the number 24 on it.
Waypoint 3 was St Leonard’s Church where the sign near the gate had several crucial words. However, the sign has gone and just 2 concrete post bases remain.
The 4th and final waypoint was an old barn but it is now a fine dwelling rom which the 2 church spires are visible. It still has 8 slit windows in the rear wall and one square window in the side wall so if anyone had managed to get this far they might have been able to calculate the final co-ordinates of N 52 31.317 W 001 37.263.
However all trace of the cache box at the base of the tree had gone.

So the multicache is well and truly defunct and, with few searchers / finders in the last 5 years, needs to be archived.

Geocache Description:

A small cache which can only be reached by visiting a series of waypoints. These take you progressively further away from a pub on footpaths that take you through some attractive countryside and past one of England’s last working collieries. It will take a couple of hours so it is definitely NOT a quick cache and dash!

The co-ordinates SHOULD BE N 52 degrees 31.119' W 001 degree 38.128' which would put you at the car park of a public house where you can leave a vehicle and also find the necessary information for the first intermediate waypoint. However, there is already a cache right next door to this car park! An attractive window tells you the year the pub was established and these 4 digits are ABCD.

Head towards the 1st Intermediate Waypoint which is at
N 52 o (A+D) (B-C-A). (2C) (B+A+D) (B+C-D)'
W 001o (C-A) (2B-D). (D-2A) (B+C) (2C-3A)'.

You should now be looking at a primitive seat which has carved into it e f g ' s seat. If A=1, B=2 etc up to Z = 26 you can work out the values for e, f and g.

The 2nd Intermediate Waypoint is at
N 52 o (f/3) (f-B-C). (e-g) (A) (2e/5)'
W 001o (e+f+g-B) . (f-3) (e-4B) (g-f +2)'

You should now be looking at a post with a white on green number. This is H.

The 3rd Intermediate Waypoint is at
N 52 o (g+e -2) . (James Bond)'
W 001o (H+g) . (H/4) (H-f-g) (f-H/3)'

You will now almost certainly be looking at a purple notice board in front of a tall building.
In the triangular top part of the notice:-
Number of words on the top line = J
Number of letters in the 3rd word on the 2nd line = K
Number of words on 2nd line more than 4 letters long = L
In the main part of the sign:-
Number of letters in the word which is written in the largest style = M
Commonest number in the 5 “am” times mentioned = N

The 4th (and last) Intermediate Waypoint is at
N 52 o (J) (K-M) . (L) (N) (M)'
W 001o (K/J) (K-L-N) . (K+L-M) (L+1-J) (K*K- 10M)'

This latitude and longitude should bring you to another old building, very different in character to the first. Here you must correctly answer three questions to give you the figures which will enable you to work out the final co-ordinates for the cache site itself.

The number of church spires clearly visible to the west? = P
The number of slit ‘windows’ on the north side of the building = Q
The number of square ‘windows’ on the west side of the building = R

The cache is not too far away at
N 52o (P+R) (R) . (2P-R) (0.5P) (Q-R)'
W 001o (3R) (2P+3R) . (Q/4) (Q-P) (H/Q)

When set up the cache contains a "First to Find" (non-trackable)geocoin, 2 trackable geocoins and a travelbug. Please try and ensure there is ALWAYS AT LEAST ONE GEOCOIN OR TRAVELBUG IN THE CACHE as a reward for geocachers who make the effort to follow the trail.

Once you have found the cache and signed the log you can head north and west on paths and road to complete a circuit back to the pub for some well-earned refreshment and maybe a bite to eat. The pub usually has a couple of real ales on tap and at the time of writing (May 2007) serves 2 meals for £8 at Mon to Friday lunchtimes.
