How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

This cache will require a very unique and innovative approach. Please read the cache description carefully before you hunt for this cache. FTF: Wheelygood

Requirements:

For starters this cache requires one simple thing. As the name of the cache would suggest, you need a kayak or a canoe. A motor boat is not appropriate. Please make sure your kayak/canoe is suitable for the trip. A kayak may be best, as the water can get very shallow. Also, make sure you have the strength for a 7.5-mile kayak trip. This may be one to leave the kids at home, though it can be broken up over a few trips and you can launch at a few points.

Safety:

Please consider safety before you embark on your caching trip as this is no ordinary cache. Before leaving for this cache, make sure to let a family member or friend know where you are going. Having a buddy is best, and will make getting to the waypoints easier. Wearing a life jacket is always a good idea, though the water never gets more than 3 feet deep. Do not do this cache during a thunderstorm. Do not plan on beginning if thunderstorms are forecasted. Plan on about 4-5 hours. You do not want to be out after dark so make sure to begin no later than 2 pm depending on light conditions and the time of year. A cell phone should go without question. We recommend placing your belongings in gallon-sized zip lock bags for storage and flotation if your kayak does not have a dry storage compartment. As you probably know, kayaking may require a fair amount of physical exertion so make sure to bring plenty of water and food to get you through the day. Nettles have been sighted near a few of the waypoints, most notabily WP 5. Just remember long pants can't hurt you. You may even want to just bring one pair along and throw them on when necessary. Though we have not encountered any red ants, thelark reported red ants in the vicinity of waypoint 5, and that red ants use formic acid just as bees do. If you have allergic reactions to bees, please be very careful on this cache. Thank you, thelark, for this information.

The Cache:

This cache consists of 6 waypoints. Each is a nice waterproof Lock 'N' Lock. We tried to keep these simple for the most part because of the length of the trip. The toughest part may be getting into and out of the kayak without flipping. If you do flip, make sure to tell us in your log! Having a buddy will make this easier. The final is loaded with some trade items and log. Please trade up, trade equal, or don't trade. It is a large cylindrical Lock 'N' Lock. Please treat the environment with respect. Do not attempt to touch or go near the wild life, just view it from a distance, especially with swans, as they will not hesitate to fight back if angered, and animals with young. During cache placement we saw snakes, herons, geese and swans with young, ducks, and trout, among many other species. Please respect your surroundings.

The Trip:

You should launch your kayak(s) at the park directly across from "Bay Creek." If you do not have your own, you can rent single or double kayaks or canoes from there, but for a day, the fees can be costly. Enter the creek and take a quick right. We strongly recommend printing out the map below as GPS maps are not always correct when it comes to the creek. The Map Source USA Topo was close enough and helped. Your journey will take you down from the Irondequiot Bay to Ellison Park and back. The depth varies and you may need to carry your kayak through a short area of Ellison park.

Good Luck Hunting
