Geocache Description:

Not too long ago, LogBear and I placed a cache at Heather Lake. LogBear was up at the lake just a short time later and found this on the way down with 1Hander.

Actually, 'this' is an old logging road that dates from the 1940s. The original trail to Heather Lake used to start just up the road from the current trailhead and used some of the old logging road, quite possibly near here. A very short, steep climp from the small pullout on the Mt. Pilchuck Road where we parked, put us on what looked like the old road. It was lovely. Looking down, you can see the main road, which moves away as you slowly work your way up the old incline. Above you is the trail to Healther Lake where you can catch glimpses of hikers. Nobody seemed to be aware of us.

There are many beautiful and fragile places here . . . lots of moss, ferns, little flowers . . . all easily trampled, but avoidable with care. The ground is soft, except for the nearby rocks that look like a streambed. I recommend that you keep to the 'road'. The ground is firmer there. It is apparent that humans have been here. If you look carefully, you can finds bits of metal of various sizes -- large stakes very near the cache, an old metal drum, or an old rusted cable; but nature seems to be reclaiming what was once hers.

About This Cache:
  • Parking coords are provided for a reason. Start your short walk to the cache near there. If you use the shortest distance to the cache from the Mt. Pilchuck Road, the terrain rating becomes a 4 or 5. (No, I won't change it on the cache page, so don't ask!)
  • You can see the edge of the old road from where you park. It is a very short scramble up to it. The cache is only a few hundred feet away from parking.
  • Please be gentle here. The cache is easily spy-able . . . there is no need to poke or prod. Just look. Enjoy the natural beauty of the area while you're at it.
  • Tread gently. There is a large rock very near the cache and you can break through next to that rock. LogBear did. Maybe you'll see his hole. ;-)
  • This is a classic Northwest style hide. Long arms could be an asset.
  • Big congrats to Raine™ on his 1st FTF! WOOT! He won a travel bug buddy and bragging rights.

Finally, please let me know if there are problems with either the cache or its coordinates. Most importantly, have fun!
