Flawed 'n' Found Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

DR. Ape: Have loved this walk but the cache has gone. To replace the cache in another area on the common I will have to contact South Norfolk as the area is subject to a SSSI.

I have decided to archive the cache to free the area for another cacher to seek agreement to set another one up.

Geocache Description:

Flordon Common is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is registered as common land. It is situated in the valley of the River Tas on shallow fenland peats.

South Norfolk Council manage this site in partnership with the Parish Council, Graziers Committee and English Nature. I would like to thank Mike Bentley of South Norfolk Council for giving permission to place this cache.

The above co-ordinates are for the start of this pleasant 1½ mile walk along footpaths and quiet country lanes. The final cache can be found at:-

N 52 31.901

E 001 12.657

When you are getting close to the cache please go past the 'goal posts' before approaching the area.

Due to the nature of the walk the area will be very muddy in places after rain.

The walk passes through a calcareous spring fed fen,  which has been created when springs emerge from the valley's sides bearing base-rich waters from the underlying chalk below, creating a rare habitat. This calcareous spring fed fen is one of the best examples in Norfolk.  On the higher area of the fen there is unimproved pasture which includes a number of species characteristic of chalk grassland.

Plants that you might find along the walk include:-

Plants found in the wetter parts of  the fen

Bog Rush Blunt Flowered Rush   Butterwort   Bog Pimpernel

Fragrant Orchid   Narrow Leafed Marsh Orchid   Marsh Helleborine   Bog Moss

Reed   Panicled Sedge   Yellow Flag Iris   Water Mint

Plants found in the drier parts of the fen

Purple Moor-grass   Bluntflowered Rush   Sedge   Southern Marsh Orchid
Ragged Robin   Marsh Valerian   Marsh Arrow-grass   Twayblade
Sheep’s Fescue   Quaking Grass   Yorkshire Fog   Brown Bent-grass
Cowslip   Yellow Rattle   Hoary Plantain   Adder’s Tongue
Bee Orchid
The very rare Narrow-mouthed Whorl Snail, Vertigo angustior, has been recorded on the site.

But is this the elusive snail?

If you find any of these plants please either take a picture or note it in your log.  Thankyou.
