Geocache Description:

THE: TrailHeads Extrodinaire -- a simple series of caches at trailheads along the Mountain Loop Highway. It is an effort to encourage you to get on the trails and our way of giving back to the caching community. Each cache page will give you a pretty good idea what to expect on the trail should you decide to venture beyond the trailhead. Make sure to check out the User's Web Page link above for useful information.

Heather Lake Trail #701
Length: 1.9 miles
Season of Use: Summer / Fall
Visitor Use: Heavy
Level of Difficulty: More Difficult
Beginning Elevation: 1600 feet
Ending Elevation: 2450 feet
Map: Green Trails Granite Falls #109

Getting there:
From the Verlot Public Service Center (11 miles east of Granite Falls), travel east on the Mountain Loop Highway 1.0 mile. Turn right (south) on the Pilchuck Road #42 and continue 1.5 miles to the trailhead on your left.

The hike:
Thirty-foot-tall trees occupy an old clearcut as you climb gently up to a flat where the glacier-carved lake lies beneath the cliffs of Mt. Pilchuck. The lake is in a subalpine forest and meadow setting and is quite popular all months of the year. This lake can be quite crowded on summer weekends. The rock-strewn, bouldered shore areas on the south side of the lake offer the best opportunity for fishing access, wildflowers and berry picking.

A Northwest Forest Pass is required for each vehicle parked at the trailhead.

The cache:
Another cache hidden amongst the rocks, but the place should be obvious once you are w/i sight. It is only necessary to move one or two rocks, no need to dismantle the rockery. Please rehide the cache carefully.
