A short hike up the old rail bed and you’ll come to the “Turkey Farm” cache.
This cache is located with a clear view of Gander’s famous “turkey farm”. This facility is actually a CDAA (Circularly Disposed Antenna Array) which makes up part of the Atlantic HFDF (High Frequency Direction Finding) and communications monitoring network. Basically it’s a military listening post. Construction of the site began in August 1967 and the facility opened in July 1971. The nickname “turkey farm” was applied to the site, probably due to the large circular array of antennas (see photo), and the staff that worked there were sometimes referred to as “turkey farmers”. This facility is one of the three most secure military listening posts protecting North America.
This cache is an all season cache that should be fairly easy to find. It contains a log book and the usual supply of trading items including lapel pins, key chain, and some kid’s toys.
Note: There is a small ditch to cross just before reaching the cache. This may cause problems for small children or during times of high water runoff when boots may be required. During the summer the cache can be reached with sneakers or hikers.
