Geocache Description:

A very pleasant walk along part of the Calder Valley Greenway / Route 66 Cycleway, with some very unusual architectural transport features.

PLEASE PARK AT THE GIVEN COORDINATES SHOWN BELOW from where you can access the start of the walk along the Greenway. Please avoid parking near the articulated trailers because they may need to be moved at any time.

This walk takes you along part of the newly established Calder Valley Greenway with a slight deviation to the Huddersfield Broad Canal.

Most of the walk is on good tarmac cycleways, but part of it involves a short, 250m section of footpath alongside the canal, which is good for walking along, even in very wet weather.

You will cross a relatively modern, low parapet bridge over the Trans-Pennine Railway line to reach Joe Kay's Bridge. Joe Kay's Bridge is a pretty, old stone arched footbridge over the Huddersfield Broad Canal with the unusual feature of being built so close to LOCK No.3.

But by far the most impressive, is the sky-walk over the wonderfully refurbished Bradley Railway Viaduct which spans both the CANAL and the River COLNE and the adjacent SEWERAGE WORKS (hence the reference in the title to 'CANAL No.3 - Eau de COLNE or Eau de TOILET).

But PLEASE don't be put off by the title or description.

See for yourself what a magnificent feat of engineering this old railway viaduct proved to be. Just stand beneath it and look up in wonderment at how the builders managed to lay bricks between the pillars to form the arches. And consider the poor bloke whos job it was to carry the bricks in a hod, up to the brickies.

Good views of the transport links afforded by this valley can be clearly seen from the viaduct itself as you walk high above the valley floor. You can even see Castle Hill in Huddersfield from here.

Beyond this viaduct you will see a very strange phenomenon. The bridge carrying the road over the Greenway looks really wierd. It looks bent, sloping, twisting and totally out of perspective, but as you get closer it becomes clear that it is an illusion, playing tricks on your eyes.

There are two intermediate (film tub) caches to discover, each of which gives you part of the coordinates required for you to find the Final Cache.

The first clue cache can be found at the coordinates shown above and in here you will also find the coordinates for the second clue cache.

KEEP AN EYE OPEN FOR MUGGLES BECAUSE THEY CAN APPEAR QUICKLY AND SILENTLY WHEN THEY ARE ON BICYCLES.

ENJOY THE WALK !
