Geocache Description:

This cache is located on the north-west aspect of Statham’s Quarry and provides another interesting aspect to the quarry and views over the surrounding area. As is common for the area, a lot of rock around here providing a good hiding spot.  Please do take a moment to re-hide the cache carefully. You will understand why when you find it.

When trading items please consider trading up or trading even and leaving items that you would want to find. Trackables (geocoins and travel bugs) are not tradeable items. Please feel free take them without making a trade, but please leave a note in your log and do log them online.

The cache is a two litre blue lidded plastic container located a few metres off the Statham’s Quarry Walk.  I estimate its elevation to be 97 metres.  It contains the usual array of items - logbook, pencil, pencil sharpener and assorted new swaps.  If you cannot find it, do log a credible (detailed) DNF and request the spoiler photo.

You are strongly encouraged to take the long road for this one (rather than the short road) and to "Take 30" and complete the Statham's Quarry Walk.  If you do the walk you will pass two other caches (Firestarter and Thomas Statham's Backyard as well as getting close to KIWI 'N OZ) so the opportunity is there for four caches on a six kilometre grade three walk. The walk should take no more than two hours to complete.  As well the walk provides an opportunity to explore other parts of the quarry. Some interesting history around here.

To further entice you, here is some background from the Swan Hills and Perth Hills Trails website:

"Good views of the city and the hills. Statham’s Quarry remains the site of one of the most extensive dolerite dykes in the escarpment. The dolerite (or diorite as it is locally known) has been used for surfacing roads for more than half a century. The quarry was originally owned by Thomas Statham, who acquired the property in 1894. In 1957 a disastrous bush fire struck, destroying most of the infrastructure leaving only the Manager’s house intact. A major attraction on this trail is the Zig Zag Railway built by E.V.H. Kean between 1890 and 1891 to connect the timber concession centred at Canning Mills with the main line at Midland. Its surveyor, Edward White, overcame the problem of getting the line up the face of the escarpment by taking it up in relatively short stages with the engine alternately pushing and pulling the trains up the Zig Zag track. The line closed down in 1949."

If you wish to make any comments please post a log or email me. Please log your find in the cache and on Geocaching.com. Please no hints or multiple logs, but please do leave a photo or two. Phone a friend is allowed, but hopefully not required.
