Geocache Description:

A plastic box located on Gilmantown Road, Speculator, in New York, in the Southern Adirondacks.

This Geocache is located near one of Speculator's most famous historical land marks, a SPLIT ROCK. It's not in the Split Rock but very close.

Historical Info: Around the 1870's there was one hotel in this area that had housed one brief sojournor. Charles Bidwell, the mason and sometimes merchant, was driving his team (or his horse)and sleigh up the Old State Road (Gilmantown Road) from Wells with the mail one night when he was caught in a severe blizzard. The road was becoming clogged with drifts and visibility was impossible through the driving, wind-whipped snow. It was suicide to continue up the road, yet there was no house for miles. About two miles below Newton's Corners (Todays Speculator), Charlie Bidwell came upon the huge cleft rock that stands beside the road. It was his only chance. Charlie drove his team ( or horse) and sled BETWEEN the wide split in the rock and lay down to sleep in the sheltered wagon. (Some say he placed the wagon upside-down over the rock's cleft and left his team outside, we do not know all the facts and lots of info has been lost forever.) The storm passed. The next day was sunny, and Bidwell and his team ( or horse) pushed their way through the snow into the settlement. When his story was told, the cleft rock was promptly termed Bidwell's Hotel. Some people were skeptical with this story, because it's hard to imagine placing a horse between this rock. But if you think about it, the horse was standing on layers of snow during the winter and so it probably only stood in the upper part of the rock's cleft.
