Geocache Description:

Near this cache was located the farm of Cuff Grandison, the first black man to settle in the town. Soon after the Revolution, Grandison appeared in town and settled at the end of a lane which became known as Cuffee Lane (now on private property). At one time it was thought that Cuff was a runaway slave but it was also rumored that he had come from the western Massachusetts town of Adams and had served in the Continental Army. Prior to this time, in 1755-56 the Acadian exiles were scattered along the coastal towns. Some were billeted in the town at the farm of Joseph Clapp which was located at the beginning of what later became known as Cuffee Lane. Parking can be found at N 42 10.820 W 070 48.855 opposite the sign saying Black Pond Preserve.
