A reasonably short multi with a couple of minor climbs and a great picnic spot.
This is the second cache in SidAndBob’s Makin' Tracks series, which will cover the dismantled Forest of Dean and Wye Valley Railways.
Lydbrook Viaduct was completed in 1874 by the Crumlin Viaduct Works. It stood 90 feet above the road below and spanned 370 feet, plus the five brick arches. In 1965 it was demolished nine years after it had been closed, but not without incident. A section came crashing down crushing the Wesleyan Chapel, which was next to The Forge Hammer pub. Fortunately no one was hurt.
Park at the coordinates below. This is a beautiful place to have a picnic and there are many benches here to just sit and enjoy the view over the River Wye - and 2 pubs across the road.
At the posted coordinates you will need to identify a, b and c from the code aXSH bc (the X has been obliterated).
d = b + c - a
e = b - a
Now proceed to N51°50.daa W002°35.aee The western end of the viaduct can be located at the waypoint below, but you don't need to go there. In fact you need go nowhere that is in any way unsafe.
