Geocache Description:

In 1718, schoolmaster John Richards donated a 3.5 acre tract of land to the town to be used for a burial ground. Ironically, he died several months later and became the first person to be buried there.

Situated along busy Route 10, this is the oldest cemetery in Morris County. The cemetery is dotted with stately oak and shag bark hickory trees and lies on the banks of the Whippany River.

The graves of 13 veterans of the Revolutionary War are here, along with that of Col. Joseph Tuttle, a veteran of the French and Indian war, and his 5 wives. Apparently Col Tuttle was quite the lady's man, but had had a hard time picking a healthy spouse.

Also among the graves is one of Abigail Kitchel, an ancestor of former First Lady, Barbara Bush and former President George W. Bush.

The plot is adjacent to the Samuel Tuttle home (privately owned), which was inadvertently built on graves in 1796.

Careful, poison ivy in the immediate area. It wasn't visible when I moved this to its current location but when I went back on a summer maint trip it was near the cache.
