Geocache Description:

This cache is a plastic ammo box placed on USFS property near where General George Armstrong Custer camped in early August 1874 during the 7th Cavalry’s expedition to explore the Black Hills. Custer’s tent was located near the curve in Golden Valley Road where you probably parked. (See the historic photographs in "Exploring with Custer, The 1874 Black Hills Expedition" by Ernest Grafe and Paul Horsted.)

The expedition departed from Fort Abraham Lincoln, Dakota Territory (near present-day Bismarck, ND) on July 2, 1874 and returned some two months later.

Miners with Custer’s more than 1000 man expedition discovered gold in French Creek about 1/4 mile north of here. The location of the discovery is marked with a sign on American Center Road (Old Highway 16A).
