Hidden off of Rt. 60, and not too far from Oronoco, is a
tributary of the Pedlar River called Statons Creek. There are some
really beautiful waterfalls here, just off the road, and with
convenient parking nearby. The falls tumble down in steps for a
couple hundred feet (maybe more). The image above is just the very
top.
We actually placed this cache last winter, but then somehow lost
the coordinates, and never made it back to get them again until
recently. The cache is a small, camo'd bottle, hanging in a tree
just off the road. Take the trail near the top of the falls, and
stay high, parallel to the road. It's only about 40 or 50 feet.
When we placed it, it was hanging about eye level. It does blend
into the tree... hey, we couldn't make it too easy!
Bring
something to write with.
You might also want to check out the benchmark across the road,
where the creek passes under. We couldn't find it listed anywhere,
but it does show up on the topo map of the area. We had it at N 37
46.092 W 079 14.173.
At certain times of the year, this place is a popular hang out
for local college and high school kids (see the gallery pix... no
lie, they were taken at the falls!), so if they're around, use some
stealth when looking for the cache. And be careful, we're told one
local college co-ed slipped down the falls and broke an arm.
