Did Simon Swim Here? Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

ValandJames: This cache has had a good life in its five years since since 2007, providing many with a challenging search. However, it is now visited infrequently, logging too many DNFs. It is time for it to retire gracefully. Thank you to all who posted feedback.

Geocache Description:

This is a simple multi-cache near a picturesque large pond which is set in National Trust land.  Public woodland footpaths lead from the car park (which is at the given coordinates) to all of the stages of the multi-cache.  The cache container is a large micro, which makes it suitable only for very small swaps.

Simons Wood is a National Trust site containing a variety of tree species, including sweet chestnuts and Scots Pine which are over one hundred years old.  The woods were donated to the National Trust by Christopher Simon, hence the name.  The beautiful Heath Pool is situated in the woods.  We have been told that Heath Pool was often used for swimming by people from the nearby area before the days of more accessible swimming pools.  At the northern end, the old roman road from Silchester to London - known as the Devil's Highway - crosses from east to west, forming what is now known as Roman Ride. A notice board at the entrance to the listed car park gives more extensive information including the efforts by the National Trust to restore and preserve the lowland heathland.

The whole area can be explored through a comprehensive network of public footpaths and rights of ways.   As with all woodland paths they can get muddy at times, so the wearing of appropriate footwear is recommended.

The given coordinates are for car parking in a free National Trust car park at N 51o 21.927’ W 000o 50.013.  Note that the car park has a height restriction of 1.9m

The first waypoint is the notice board at N 51o 21.888’ W 000o 49.991’ which tells you that the woods were donated by Christopher Simon in ABCD and that another adjoining part was donated by Roy Brooks in EFGH. This followed the original acquisition of land by the newly formed National Trust in JKLM by local subscription

The second waypoint located at

N 51o 22.(A+D)EH’ W 000o 50.(L-J)K(C+M)

marks a place of commemoration of the life of someone with significance for the area.  This person lived from PQRSTUVW

To find the final location you will need to do some simple arithmetic, so sit and enjoy the view!

The final coordinates are:

N 51o 22.R(S+C)(M+D)’      W 000o 50.MGV

The final location of the cache is hidden on public land just at the edge of the National Trust-owned property.  All of the waypoints are in heavily wooded areas, meaning that GPSr reception can be variable at times.  Patience may be needed to get the required accuracy!

When first placed, the cache contained a FTF Geocoin, a FTF pin-badge, a log and a pencil.  There were also individual cards for first, second and third to find.

Remember this cache is a large micro which is only suitable for very small swaps.
