La galleria Adige-Garda nasce come canale scaricatore delle piene del fiume Adige.
E' lungo 9,873 km e il dislivello fra imbocco e sbocco e' di 106 m (pendenza media 0,8688 %). La sezione idraulica e' di circa 50 mq per una portata massima di 500 mc/s (per capire meglio: la portata media dell'Adige e' di circa 200 mc/s e del Sarca 60 mc/s !).
I lavori iniziarono nel 1939 ma furono sospesi nel 1943 per problemi di soldi (seconda guerra mondiale). Successivamente, nel 1954-59, si decise di completare l'opera. Essa fu utilizzata, fino ad oggi, per ben 10 volte. Quella piu' onerosa fu nel 1966 (492 mc/s per un totale di 64'000'000 mc d'acqua scaricati nel lago di Garda - che per intendersi ne contiene in media 49'000'000'000). Sembra ormai assodato che durante la costruzione si intercettò la falda del lago di Loppio facendolo in pratica scomparire. Sono allo studio progetti per ripristinare l'originale impermeabilità di quest'ultimo bacino ma le soluzioni da adottare sono costose e di riuscita non garantita.
