This urban multi-cache will take you through the fine old Oslo
district of Frogner.
The cache is located at N 59°55.xxx E 010°42.yyy.
The start coordinates (waypoint 1) point to a new statue
of a young man with a bicycle. This is Gunnar "Kjakan" Sønsteby, a famous
freedom fighter and hero of the anti-nazi resistance during World
War 2. He is standing just next to a statue of a famous British
statesman.
This area also marks the start of my
Armanimania Sq. cache, make sure you don't confuse the two. If
you haven't found that one yet, you may want to take it first, as
the Frogner cache will take you more than a kilometer away, near
several other Oslo geocaches.
Two years are listed at the base of Sønsteby's statue. Make a
note of the first year and call it A.
Look west across the square and aim for Frognerveien, which curves
and climbs its way through the classic Frogner district. You will
follow this elegant city street towards your final destination, but
sidetrips are recommended and one is also necessary to collect one
of the clues leading to the cache.
No walk in Frogner is complete without a sidetrip up Kruses gate,
past some fine old wooden mansions. At waypoint 2 is a very
old and important one, which these days houses an art gallery. On
the facade, a navy blue historical sign mentions a year, or rather
a decade (four digits), when this place is believed to be built.
Subtract this number from A, multiply by 2 and subtract 5 from the
resulting number to get the yyy coordinate.
At waypoint 3 you will se an interesting electric
installation, topped with an unusual streetlight. There are several
such installations in this area. Subtract 652 from the serial
number on this installation, and you'll have the xxx
coordinate.
The cache is inspired by my
Verkehrsinsel 2-cache, but this is by no means a desolate
island. The cache is located near an important traffic
crossroads.
The cache is not friendly to little people. This is a very
public place, and you are very exposed. Please be extremely
stealthy when retrieving it.
The cache is an unmodified Mostly Moose egg, containing pencil,
logsheet, a Korean phone decoration ("mobildongle"), a moose
dropping, a moose coin, a Wells Fargo gold dollar and two
psychedelic paper clips.
In the spirit of "cache in, trash out", I have removed quite a
bit of garbage from the site to the nearby bins. Please do your
share to keep this fine area clean.
