Geocache Description:

This is a trail of caches following in the footsteps of Dylan Thomas and on the theme of his writings of Under Milk Wood.
Dylan completed seven major poems as well as ‘Quite Early One Morning’ and a number of film scripts while living at Majoda.
Also while here he started to write ‘Under Milk Wood’ where he drew upon New Quay for the names of many of the characters and places in the play.

Dylan and his wife Caitlin came to New Quay in September 1944 where he lived in a wood and asbestos shack called Majoda. He payed £1 a week rent on this property which had no amenities. There was Calor gas for light and cooking, a paraffin stove for heating and the water came from a tap out on the road.
Next door to Majoda stands Fynnonfeddyg the once home of Dylan’s old school friend Vera Phillips. Vera married William Killick a commando in the SOE who spent time in Greece behind enemy lines during the war. When William returned in 1945 he found that Vera had been supporting Dylan and Caitlin on his money.
This caused a wedge between the two families and on the 6th March 1945 a fight broke out between William and Dylan in the Black Lion. Later that evening at about 10.40pm William still drunk, turned up at Majoda and fired shots into the bungalow with his Sten gun.
Killick was arrested and after his trial in June 1945 was acquitted of all charges.

Both the now modern Majoda and Fynnonfeddyg still stand here today overlooking the town of New Quay.

You can Park for free at Coed Llanina or if you’re lucky a quick cache and dash, park on the road side.

The cache is next to the field that looks over Cardigan Bay where part of a Hollywood film was shot in May 2007 about Dylan Thomas and his life. ‘The Edge of Love’ stars Keira Knightley (Vera Phillips), Sienna Miller (Caitlin MacNamara), Matthew Rhys (Dylan Thomas) and Cillian Murphy (William Killick) it also stars the singer Lisa Stansfield.

This same field is where Prince Charles came via helicopter before travelling by car to study at Aberystwyth university in 1969 and is still known locally as ‘Charlies field’.
