Geocache Description:

North Chickamauga Quarry Earthcache
This jaw-dropping landmark is located along the North Chickamauga greenway in Hixson, Tennessee!

Excavated by the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1936 -1937, the quarry served as a source of limestone for the construction of the Chickamauga dam located approximately one mile to the south. A portion of the greenway trail follows the old haul road to the dam.

Here is a description of the Chickamauga Reservoir features
This quarry is located near a large area known as the Chickamauga Reservoir.

Chickamauga Reservoir is a navigable impoundment of the Tennessee River in southeastern Tennessee that extends 59 river miles northeast from Chattanooga to Watts Bar Dam. Together with its navigable tributary, the Hiwassee River, this reservoir provides 79 miles of commercially navigable channels.

The physical environment of the project area is strongly affected by its location within the Ridge and Valley physiographic region. Chickamauga Reservoir occupies a relatively broad, flat valley formed by the Tennessee River within a series of northeast-southwest trending parallel ridges. The ridge tops are composed of resistant sandstones and conglomerates averaging about 1000 feet in elevation. The valleys, composed of more easily erodible limestones and shales, are narrow, flat to undulating, and, generally, have been cleared for agriculture and urban development. The Cumberland Escarpment rises abruptly above the western side of the reservoir, forming a sharp separation between the Cumberland Plateau Physiographic Province and the Ridge and Valley Province. The Blue Ridge Mountains rise gradually to the east of the study area. The soils in this part of the Ridge and Valley, generally, formed from limestone, dolomite, sandstone, and shale

In order to gain credit for this earthcache, you must complete the following:

1) At the posted coordinates you will find the Chickamauga Quarry historical sign. Email to me the project this sign was erected, and the persons name at the bottom of the sign.

2) From the posted coordinates, find a good vantage point to take a picture of you holding your GPS with the quarry in the background. NOTE: Do NOT cross the gate. Trails are closed leading into the quarry, and land managers have asked those to be off limits. Signs are posted, so basically obey them and all will be okay.

3) Walk the paths, and give me a rough elevation difference from the top of the quarry and where the historical sign is located, and email that figure to me. You will find the greenway trail running along the top.

Logs without the required info emailed to me, or the picture posted on this page will be deleted.

PLEASE NOTE: When taking the elevation readings at the top of the quarry, their is ABSOLUTELY no need to cross the wooden fence. That is there for safety of people walking the trail. I will accept readings from the trail.

Also, I must reiterate NOT going anywhere that says 'Keep Out.'
