Geocache Description:

We love geocaching and all the interesting places it has taken us. Now here is one for you.

Coronado National Memorial commemorates the first European exploration of the American Southwest. It lies within sight of the San Pedro River Valley through which the Coronado Expedition first entered the present-day United States in search of the fabled Cities of the Cibola. The year is 1540. His quest was not one of conquest, but of a missionary nature. He was to convert the Indians from their earth based religion, to Christianity.

On July 7th 1540 he and his men arrived in the city of Hawikuh, hungry and low on supplies. After brief, unsuccessful negotiations, the Spaniards attacked and forced the Indians to abandon the village. The village, well stocked with food, became his headquarters until November 1540. I wonder how focused he was on converting the Indians. Sounds like he was more interested in taking what they had.

This is the unknown history of our area. Please continue a few more miles down the road and explore the memorial. Learn how cruel exploration and conquest can be. Discover the many tribes of Indians who were attacked and forced from their homes because they would not abandon centuries of their faith. All of this 200 years before Jamestown.

This is a simple micro, log only cache. Please return it to it’s hiding place when your finished. Oh, and bring your own pin.
