The Denali Series: Esker Traveler
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
The Denali Highway, one of America's remaining truly remote roads, connects the George Parks Highway and Richardson Highways allowing visitors to visit remote Alaska on a graded, summer accessible road while experiencing the beauty of the Last Frontier.
Many parts of the Denali Highway travel along Eskers or ridges of gravel formed by streams flowing under glaciers. As much of the area was covered by glaciers thousands of years ago, the builders of this road used a natural feature to construct the road rather than cutting across lower lands filled with water and tundra. This particular esker also allows the visitor to view many Kames, conical hills or terraces, and Kettle Lakes, holes formed by melting blocks of glacial ice.
In order to receive credit for this cache, please email the number of Kames you can observe to the north of the coordinates as well as a description of the tree that partially blocks your view.
Please use good judgement and planning when traveling the Denali Highway. The weather can change quickly and services are remote. Food, water, good tires, and a well maintained vehicle are required. Many car rentals companies DO NOT allow their cars to travel this road. The road surface does vary greatly based on weather conditions and cell phone reception DOES NOT exist along the 130 mile road.
