Rock the Roost - Rock Outcrop EarthCache
Rock the Roost - Rock Outcrop
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This is a moderately strenuous hike; please come prepared with
plenty of water, good shoes, and hiking staff. Expect to hike just
under 4 miles round trip with some steep elevation changes.
An ‘outcrop’ is a geological term referring to the appearance of
bedrock or superficial deposits exposed at the surface of the
Earth. In most places the rock cannot be seen because it is covered
by a layer of soil and vegetation. However in places where the
overlying cover is removed through erosion, the rock may be
exposed, or crop out. Such exposure will happen most frequently in
areas where erosion is rapid and exceeds the weathering rate such
as on steep hillsides, river banks, or tectonically active areas.
Bedrock and superficial deposits may also be exposed at the earth's
surface due to digging.
Outcrops are an important part of geological science. The rock
& deposits can be analyzed to help provide a record of earth
history.
Atop Buzzard’s Roost you will find not only a magnificent view but
a rock outcrop as well. The rock formation appears above the
surface of the surrounding land due to the wind and other natural
erosion.
From backpacker.com:
This is a moderate day hike that takes you through some
beautiful forests and along some awesome rock formations. The trail
ends on the top of Buzzard's Roost Rock with a magnificent view of
part of the conservatory and Greenbriar Ridge(the highest point in
Adams County). This area has some very rare species of plants, and
caterpillars and butterflies that you will find nowhere else on
earth. You might also expect to see deer, coyote, fox, the
occasional rattlesnake, and very, very rarely a black bear may
wonder down out of the Appalachians.
