This is a special stone circle. It is a small henge monument. Originally there was a stone circle within the henge. ( A henge is a prehistoric architectural structure usually circular or oval shaped on a flat area over 65 feet in diameter. It is enclosed by boundary earthwork which is usually a ditch with a higher external bank and often has two portals)
At Broomend there had originally been an avenue of standing stones leading the way to the entrance of the henge and further concentric circles of stones were nearby. Only two of the henge stones remain and one avenue stone.
There is a pictish symbol stone in the centre. This is not it's original position. It was rescued by Charles Elphinstone Dalrymple, a local Landowner who excavated the henge in 1855. The pictish stone was found when the railway was being laid, and moved here by Dalrymple to protect it.
Dalrymple found many things during the excavation. One being that there were cremation burials at each of the monoliths (Originally 6).
Further excavation was carried out in 2005/6. Everything indicates early bronze age.

On the website click on 'Research' on the blue band, the click on Prehistoric Archaeology. You will then see Broomend. Click on this to see the 2006 report.
The site sadly is not well preserved, nor in a lovely location either, but important nonetheless. Dalrymple had planned to build a wall around it for protection, but presumably funding was in short supply then too!
It lies to the south of Inverurie in Port Elphinstone. Turn right behind the BP petrol station.
The cache, a military cigareete tin container, is not beside the henge as it is in the property of the nearby paper mill, but it does overlook it.
