Wis Kid: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

A small amount of bushwhacking may be required. Not much though.

The Kenosha/Racine Land Trust purchased this site and donated it to the city as an addition to the existing Root River Parkway. The land was dedicated to the memory of Mary Ellen Helgren Johnson, a respected local environmental activist.

Officials believe the area is contaminated with lead and chromium from back when the site was used as a depository for old foundry silt.

They are trying to correct the problem through phytoremediation(the process by which environmental problems are solved through the use of plants).

Green, leafy plants like Indian Mustard and ragweed are capable of extracting lead and chromium from soil, and their use is seen as an environmentally friendly alternative to costly engineering-based solutions that greatly disturb the environment.

How's that for a lesson in environmentalism?

CONGRATS TO tom k. ON THE FTF!

*Edited Terrain Rating 9/3/07 - Seems the terrain has gotten tougher since the hide.
