The Denali Series: Susitna
River
This ammo can cache is located on the east bank of the Susitna
River. The Susitna River is a major drainage system in the Denali
region. The river flows south from the Susitna Glacier and the
Alaska Range and eventually turns west to flow through the
Talkeetna Mountains and then south to empty into Cook Inlet. The
Susitna is not floatable because of Devil's Canyon downstream. You
also need to use EXTREME caution near this river because if you
fall in, you will need immediate rescue. Please keep a close eye on
pets and children and keep them both away from the river's
edge.
The cache is not located on the river bank but rather a safe
distance away.
This cache was placed as part of a Father's Day 2007 Geocaching
Expedition to introduce visitors to the vast and unspoiled scenery
of remote Alaska. The terrain is a reflection of the difficulty in
reaching the cache location along gravel roads.
Original Contents included a log book and pencil, scrimshaw book
mark, White Jeep TB, 2006 AK Geocaching pin, and various other
items.
Please use good judgement and planning when traveling the
Denali Highway. The weather can change quickly and services are
remote. Food, water, good tires, and a well maintained vehicle are
required. Many car rentals companies DO NOT allow their cars to
travel this road. The road surface does vary greatly based on
weather conditions and cell phone reception DOES NOT exist along
the 130 mile road.
