COLLIE - DARKAN RAIL TRAIL
Features open cut mine at Buckingham and spectacular wildflowers in spring. Summer time (due to heat) is probably the least favourable time to use the trail if you are hiking, late autumn to early summer is ideal. August to October is the best time to catch the vast array of wildflowers although some can be found all year. The trail runs along the Coalfields Highway which means it is accessible all year round for Geocaching.
The trail surface was graded and rolled twice during construction and contains sufficient clay to maintain a relatively firm surface all year. It is suitable for hybrid type bikes and possibly some wheelchairs. The rail trail committee recommends that all horses that people are intending to use on the trail be shod as the gravel stones in the trail surface can cause problems for horse's hooves.
At this stage though the original railway line between Collie and Buckingham is within an area being mined for coal just west of Buckingham. When the mining operations are completed the area will be rehabilitated and the original road and rail reserve reinstated. The trail will then continue to Collie.
This is one of the four caches ( Buckingham Trail Head , Bowelling Staion , Boolading and Darkan Station) that I have placed along this trail to attract geocachers and visitors to the area. All the caches can be accessed by vehicle along the Coalfield Highway by parking a few hundred metres from each cache. There is absolutely no vehicle access onto the trail.
BOWELLING STATION
Bowelling is a townsite in the great southern agricultural region, located 234 km south south east of Perth and 32 km east of Collie. Bowelling is an Aboriginal name the meaning of which is unknown. It was first recorded as the name of a pool in the Collie River in 1890. When the railway from Collie to Darkan opened in 1906 and passed close to the pool, a siding was established nearby and at first referred to as Siding Number 2. In December 1907 it was renamed Bowelling, and at the Surveyor Generals suggestion a few lots were surveyed at the siding in 1908. Bowelling was gazetted a townsite in 1908.
