COLLIE - DARKAN RAIL TRAIL
Features open cut mine at Buckingham and spectacular wildflowers in spring. Summer time (due to heat) is probably the least favourable time to use the trail if you are hiking, late autumn to early summer is ideal. August to October is the best time to catch the vast array of wildflowers although some can be found all year. The trail runs along the Coalfields Highway which means it is accessible all year round for Geocaching.
The trail surface was graded and rolled twice during construction and contains sufficient clay to maintain a relatively firm surface all year. It is suitable for hybrid type bikes and possibly some wheelchairs. The rail trail committee recommends that all horses that people are intending to use on the trail be shod as the gravel stones in the trail surface can cause problems for horse's hooves.
At this stage though the original railway line between Collie and Buckingham is within an area being mined for coal just west of Buckingham. When the mining operations are completed the area will be rehabilitated and the original road and rail reserve reinstated. The trail will then continue to Collie.
This is one of the four caches ( Buckingham Trail Head , Bowelling Staion , Boolading and Darkan Station) that I have placed along this trail to attract geocachers and visitors to the area. All the caches can be accessed by vehicle along the Coalfield Highway by parking a few hundred metres from each cache. There is absolutely no vehicle access onto the trail.
BOOLADING
Boolading is a townsite west of Darkan, and derives its name from a property name. In 1907 the W.A.G.R. sought a name for a new siding here on the Collie-Darkan line, and the name Boolading was suggested by H. Farrell the district Surveyor (in "compliment to Mr W. Gibbs, the most hospitable settler on the line"). The townsite was gazetted in 1909, and was originally spelt Bulading. The spelling was amended to Boolading in 1955. The name is Aboriginal, but the meaning is not known. Boo-la means "plenty; much; many; abundance", in some south west dialects.
The Cache
This cache has been placed in the Shire of Boolading along the trail.
The turn off this cache is at Farrell Road off Coalfields Highway. The cache is about 100 Mtrs along the trail.
