Rail Trail ( Darkan Station ) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Balayang: I am regretfully archiving this cache since unfortunately there has been no action to restore it, or any communication from the cache owner, Bella Vista, requesting additional time.

An ample opportunity has been provided for the Cache Owner to respond, but since this opportunity has been ignored, I can only conclude that the cache has been abandoned.

Caches archived under these circumstances are unable to be Unarchived, and this location is now available for the placement of a new cache, by somebody else.

Geocache Description:

COLLIE - DARKAN RAIL TRAIL
Features open cut mine at Buckingham and spectacular wildflowers in spring. Summer time (due to heat) is probably the least favourable time to use the trail if you are hiking, late autumn to early summer is ideal. August to October is the best time to catch the vast array of wildflowers although some can be found all year. The trail runs along the Coalfields Highway which means it is accessible all year round for Geocaching.
The trail surface was graded and rolled twice during construction and contains sufficient clay to maintain a relatively firm surface all year. It is suitable for hybrid type bikes and possibly some wheelchairs. The rail trail committee recommends that all horses that people are intending to use on the trail be shod as the gravel stones in the trail surface can cause problems for horse's hooves.
At this stage though the original railway line between Collie and Buckingham is within an area being mined for coal just west of Buckingham. When the mining operations are completed the area will be rehabilitated and the original road and rail reserve reinstated. The trail will then continue to Collie.

This is one of the four caches ( Buckingham Trail Head , Bowelling Staion , Boolading and Darkan Station) that I have placed along this trail to attract geocachers and visitors to the area. All the caches can be accessed by vehicle along the Coalfield Highway by parking a few hundred metres from each cache. There is absolutely no vehicle access onto the trail.

DARKAN
Darkan is a townsite in the south west 30 km west of Arthur River. The townsite was gazetted in 1906, but the area was settled by William John Gibbs and his family in the late 1860's. One of Gibb's properties was named Darkan, but the name is believed to be a local Aboriginal name. The meaning is not known at present.

The Cache
The cache is in the township of Darkin not far from an information bay parking area.
The old Darkin Railway Station is only a few hundred metres east of the cache.
