Geocache Description:

This is a pleasant and easy walk in a wooded location, but there is a small shallow stream that must be crossed, so it is not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs.


Crichton-McCormick Park is a family-oriented community park located in Portage, PA. The park hosts a variety of recreational areas including a swimming pool, ball fields, tennis courts, 10 picnic shelters, and Project Kids Place, an elaborate volunteer-built playground area sure to delight children young and old alike.

The park is also home to the The Sonman Mine Explosion Memorial which was relocated from Jamestown to its present site in the park in 1960. While in the area, you may want to stop and visit the Portage Station Museum which offers a documentary about the disaster titled "63 Men Down: The Story of the Sonman Mine Explosion" along with coal mine and railroad artifacts and exhibits.


Please note that Park hours are from 5:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m. daily.

Directions from Route 219 (North or South): Get off at the South Fork exit and turn right. Travel on Route 53 North for approximately 6 miles and make another right onto 164 East. Hint - if you pass by the shopping plaza on the left, you've gone too far. Travel 164 East for about 3/4 mile through the town of Portage, turn right onto Johnson Avenue, and continue until you reach the park entrance.
