Geocache Description:

On part 2 there is a short climb up hill--watch for the Prickly Pear cactus--sharp!!!

✳️✳️✳️✳️We have redone this cache and the Posted coordinates take you to the new First Stage. From here you will find the coordinates for the a Final Stage which is located about .9 miles further up the road ✳️ Known in the early days as "Devil's Lake"This body of fresh water was chosen by the CNR as a water supply station for the steam locomotives. A water tank was erected about 1909--probably somewhere near where you will be standing.Water was pumped from the lake to the water tower. The area began developing and became a favorite recreation site for some 70 miles around.Refreshment booths, dance hall, bath houses,a wharf into the lake,a large ice house, playgrounds, ball diamonds and spots for picnics of all kinds were to be found. As the years went on buildings were enlarged dining halls, ice cream parlors, dance halls, pool rooms ect were popular.Motor boat rides of the lake were offered back in the war years. Many July 1 celebrations, sports days and ball tournaments were held.Big time bands played on a regular basis ,cabins and camp sites were popular. The beach areas were lined with swimmeres of the day.The grounds boasted 4 of the finest tennis courts of the day in the province and a 9 hole golf cource was laid out.Huge crowds came to the lake from all over to ball tournaments with teams from USA such as Texas,Kansas City, Montana ect. came to play Sask's best.In the 1930's the lake started to recede with the "Dirty 30's"The lake receded further each year until with the provinces help a huge swimming pool was built in the late 1930's.A well finally had to be dug to keep the pool going but intrest finally waned and businesses finally folded in the '40's.A fire completely destroyed the pavillion and all attached buildings and no water of any value was left in the lake. This spelled the "END" of a once beautiful and prosperous summer resort in Saskatchewan.(See final information at the final cache about this area) We hope you enjoy this little part of Saskatchewan history as you drive by the area.If you have time check out the local museum at Harris just up the road--Harris is HOME OF THE PLAY "PULL OF THE LAND" and "PULL OF THE LAND-THE SEQUEL" Check out other caches along the road as you travel East and West of here. Did not put in a FTF Prize but FTF can take an extra button if you wish. Benny say's "You never know when your going to find your last cache--so enjoy" and CACHE ON. CONGRATULATIONS TO CHEVELLE on FTF--WAY TO GO!!!
