Geocache Description:

Cache is a film container that can be accessed by wheelchair, very close to parking in a turn-out along Old Foresthill Rd.

This cache is one in a series of caches dedicated to showing where the shore for the Auburn Lake would be if the dam were built. The surface of the lake would be 1,100 ft in elevation, from the overlook in Auburn to many miles up both the middle and north forks of the American River canyon.

Needless to say, there are MANY areas caches in this series can be placed. Which is why I'm inviting any cachers who would like, to join me and place caches in this series. Make sure it's within The Lake's area, and that it's close to 1,100 ft. I am allowing myself and others +/- 100 vertical feet due to the fact that good cache locations can sometimes be hard to find. If you choose to place one for this series, please email me a day or two in advance and I'll let you know which number yours will be, which should help avoid duplicates. Just name your cache "Shoreline #x" where x would be the next number in the series.

This is the tenth in the series, and it seemed like a good place for people to hang out, socialize, and drink by the lake. At 1,094 ft the bar could be built just above this area.

The rapid below is known as Murderer's Bar Rapid. In the spring of 1849 while prospecting Thomas M. Buckner and Captain Ezekiel Merrit found every evidence of a plundered camp, and evidence that the fight had been a terrific one. Not only had white men of the party been killed, but the Indians had suffered greatly too. After searching the area for bodies the only evidence they found was a mass of charred human bones. Every vestige of clothing and arms had disappeared. With thier picks and shovels they dug a hole and buried the bones as they found them, all mixed together. Before leaving Buckner decided the place's name must be marked so he took out his hunting knife, stripped off a section of bark from a large alder tree, and carved in large letters MURDERER'S BAR From that day to the present it has held that name. There was much mystery attached to the death of the unknown.

Congrats to Warriorrider for FTF!
