Geocache Description:

Mack's Peak is a serious hike. The peak elevation is 10,033 ft and there is a 1800 ft elevation gain from the start point to the top. The round trip is about six miles and you should expect to take five to six hours to do it.

I thought that I would place a mountain top cache up in the Mt. Charleston area before LV Hiker claimed them all. To do this hike you will need to go to the end of the dirt road in Mack's Canyon, which is off of the highway to Lee Canyon. There are several caches in the Mack's Canyon area for your caching pleasure, but this one won't be easy. You can find a description of the hike in the book Hiking Las Vegas by Branch Whitney. This is a strenous hike and you should not do it alone. There are several ways to get to the top of the ridgeline that is at the base of the final peak, but there is only one way up to the peak from there that I know of. Do some research before you start off on this one. At the top there is a large cairn with an ammo can that is the peak log book. Be sure to sign it. The cache, now a German butter dish, is about 80 ft north from the peak cairn hidden in the rocks. I put a FTF pin in a white egg shaped piece of white plastic for the first person to get there. Good luck.
