Serra San Quirico, una città di pietra adagiata su costa
rocciosa, una città che assume le sembianze di una nave con la prua
sulla valle dell'Esino. I monti sovrastano l'antica fortezza,
testimoni, nei secoli, delle vestigia di Serra: un passato
importante che l'ingiuria del tempo non ha cancellato, che ancora
oggi si coglie dall'osservazione attenta delle edificazioni civili
e religiose, dell'impianto urbanistico della città murata, tra le
più belle delle Marche.
Ovunque regna il verde delle piante e delle pinete, fresche acque
di sorgente (Fontenova e Fontecorona) rinfrancano dalle fatiche il
moderno viandante.
Siete all’interno del Parco Regionale della Gola della Rossa e
di Frasassi: la montagna è lì, con le sue bellezze, le sue
passeggiate, le sue dolci atmosfere di pace...
Le origini di Serra San Quirico risalgono a tempi assai remoti per
la posizione chiave del luogo: si suppone sia sorta come caposaldo
romano all'imbocco della Gola della Rossa (per molto tempo
infestata da pericolosi briganti), passaggio obbligato per Roma e
punto di grande importanza strategica.
Se intendete passare qualche ora a visitare Serra San Quirico, si
può tranquillamente parcheggiare l'auto proprio all'ingresso del
paese nei pressi della ex Chiesetta di Santa Maria del
Mercato (oggi adibita a teatro e con un campanile tra i
migliori esempi di arte romanica della zona) e partire, salendo
poco più avanti sulla destra, dalla piazza principale (Piazza
della Libertà), il "salotto" del paese.
All'interno vi aspettano ripidi saliscendi, lastricati di pietra
arenaria, viuzze, archi, scorci suggestivi e i caratteristici
camminamenti coperti lungo le mura (le “copertelle”).
Ok, volete raggiungere la cache?! Dalla piazza, imboccate la
scalinata, costeggiando sulla sinistra la magnifica Chiesa di
S.Lucia (1281), con il suo bellissimo interno in ricco
barocco marchigiano, altari dorati, soffitto affrescato e un organo
di pregevole fattura.
La cache è veramente facile da trovare, visto che, in fondo, la sua
“sentinella” non è più inespugnabile come una volta…
La passeggiata vi ha fatto venire un certo appetito?! Bene, a Serra
San Quirico trovate due tra i ristoranti più validi dell’intera
zona (“Le Copertelle” e “La Pianella”), in cui potrete assaggiare
tutta la tradizione culinaria dell’appennino marchigiano (pasta
fatta in casa, salumi, formaggi, carni alla brace, …).

Serra San Quirico, a stone city gracefully laid down along a
rocky slope, like a ship with the prow pointed at Esino Valley.
Mountains dominate the ancient fortress, as witnesses, during the
ages, of Serra history: an important past that the ravages of time
didn’t wipe out, and that is still evident by carefully looking at
civil and religious buildings, at the walled town planning scheme,
among the most beautiful ones of the Marches Region.
Everywhere the green of trees and pine forests reigns, cool spring
waters (Fontenova e Fontecorona) hearten the modern wayfarer.
You are inside the Regional Park of the Rossa and Frasassi
Gorges: the mount is there, with its beauty, its walks, its
lovely atmosphere of peace…
The origin of Serra San Quirico goes back to very old ages, thanks
to its strategic position: it’s supposed to be risen as Roman
stronghold at the mouth of the Rossa Gorge (for a long time
infested with dangerous brigands), unavoidable pass for Rome and
very important key strategic point.
If you want to spend a few hours to visit Serra San Quirico, you
can easily park your car just at the village entrance, close to the
little ex-Church of Santa Maria of Market (nowadays a
theatre, with a bell tower among the best examples of Romanic Art
in the area) and start walking some meters a bit further on, on the
right, from the main square (Freedom Square), the village
“living-room”.
Inside the historical centre you will face steep ups and downs,
sandstone pavings, lanes, arches, striking views and the typical
covered walks around the town walls( the “copertelle”).
Ok, do you want to reach the cache?! From the square, enter the
steps that runs along the magnificient St.Lucy Church
(1281), with its beautiful interior of rich baroque, gilt altars,
frescoed ceiling and an organ of valuable workmanship.
The cache is very easy to find, considering that, after all, its
“sentry” is no more so impregnable as in the past…
Walking whets your appetite?! Well, in Serra San Quirico you can
find two restaurants among the best of the whole valley (“Le
Copertelle” and “La Pianella”), where you can taste every
gastronomical specialities of the Marches mountains (egg noodles
and homemade pasta, various kinds of cold meats and salami,
pecorino cheese, roast meats and so on…).
